Ramirez had put up impressive numbers at George Washington High School in New York City, batting .633 and .650 respectively in his last two seasons. The Indians’ first round draft pick in June ’91, Ramirez almost won the Rookie-level Appalachian League’s triple crown, batting .326 with 19 home runs and 6 RBI. He led the league and set Burlington franchise records in home runs and RBI, but finished third in batting average. Not surprisingly, Ramirez was named the Appalachian League’s top prospect almost unanimously by the managers. “It’s been nice to see him play every day,” Burlington manager Dave Keller said. “The only thing he doesn’t do as well as anticipated is steal bases. I think in time his speed will come.”
