CARLOS DELGADO
After nearly winning the Florida State League triple crown in 1992 by leading the league in home runs and RBI while placing second behind teammate Rob Butler in batting average, Carlos Delgado has established himself as the top prospect of one of the best minor league systems in baseball. Delgado was signed in 1988 by the Toronto Blue Jays as a 16-year-old free agent. Now 20 years old, he’s still growing into his 6-foot-3-inch fram, and when he does, his power numbers will increase from their already impressive levels. His 30 home rums were the most in the Florida State League, which is notorious for its spacious ballparks, since 1971, and he was the first FSL player to reach the century mark in RBI since 1984. He also became only the fifth player in league history to club three homers in a game when he accomplished the feat May 8. These number along gwith his league-leading marks in on-base percentage (.402), extra-base hits (62) and slugging percentage (.579) earned Delgado the Florida State League Most Valuable Player award as well as Baseball Weekly’s Minor League Player of the Year award.
