The cream of this year’s rookie crop, Niklas Lidstrom has had a dramatic impact on the NHL, leading all freshman scorers with 39 points in his first 43 games. A creative playmaker, Lidstrom led all NHL defensemen in plus/minus, recording a plus-32 mark at the midpoint of the ’91-92 season. A third round selection of the Detroit Red Wings in the ’89 Entry Draft, Lidstrom spent three seasons with Vasteras of the Swedish Premier Division before making his professional debut with the Wings at the beginning of the ’91-92 campaign. A key member of Team Sweden’s defensive corps at the ’91 Canada Cup, Lidstroms’ mature play along the blueline earned him the opportunity to demonstrate his skills at the NHL level.
